Stripe vs PayPal vs Wise for Freelancers

Written by Ryan F. · Independent driver and former small-business owner

Getting paid should be the easy part of freelancing. For many independent workers, it is anything but. Payment processors take a cut, currency conversion adds hidden costs, and payout delays can wreck your cash flow timing. The three most popular options — Stripe, PayPal, and Wise — each have distinct trade-offs depending on where you live, what currencies you use, and how much you bill per month.

This comparison uses real 2026 fee schedules and typical freelancer scenarios so you can pick the right processor without guessing. Use our Payment Fee Calculator to model your exact numbers.

Stripe

Stripe is the developer-friendly option. It powers online payments for millions of businesses, from solo freelancers to Shopify. Its API is clean, its documentation is excellent, and its dashboard gives you detailed transaction logs, dispute tracking, and revenue analytics.

Fees (2026): 2.9% + 30¢ per successful card charge in the U.S. International cards add 1%. ACH and bank transfers are 0.8% (max $5). Stripe Billing for recurring invoices adds 0.5% on top. Payouts to U.S. bank accounts arrive in 2–3 business days (instant payout for 1.5% extra).

Best for: Freelancers who run their own invoicing flow, need subscriptions, or want to embed payments on their website. The $0 monthly fee makes it accessible even at low volume.

PayPal

PayPal is the most universally recognized payment option. Clients know it, trust it, and often insist on it. The downside is higher fees for international transactions and a less favorable exchange rate markup when converting between currencies.

Fees (2026): 3.49% + 49¢ per transaction for domestic U.S. transfers. International transactions add 1.5% currency conversion markup on top of the base fee. PayPal Invoicing has no monthly fee, but the per-transaction fee is higher than Stripe for card payments. Bank transfers (PayPal Balance to bank) are free for standard speed (1–3 business days).

Best for: Freelancers who need to send invoices quickly and want clients to pay without creating an account. PayPal's guest checkout reduces friction for one-time payments.

Wise (formerly TransferWise)

Wise is built for cross-border freelancers. It uses the real mid-market exchange rate with a small, transparent markup — typically 0.41%–0.7% depending on the currency pair. If you invoice clients in EUR, GBP, or AUD and need to convert to USD, Wise almost always beats PayPal and Stripe on conversion fees.

Fees (2026): Wise charges a percentage fee for receiving money in a borderless account and a separate conversion fee when moving funds between currencies. For a $1,000 payment from EUR to USD, you might pay $4.10 in fees at the mid-market rate — compared to $15+ through PayPal. Payouts to your local bank take 1–2 business days.

Best for: Freelancers with international clients in multiple currencies. If you only bill in USD domestically, Wise adds complexity without much benefit.

Real Cost Example: $1,000 Invoice

How much do you actually keep when a client pays $1,000 through each processor?

  • Stripe: $1,000 × 2.9% + 30¢ = $29.30 fee. You keep $970.70.
  • PayPal: $1,000 × 3.49% + 49¢ = $34.89 fee. You keep $965.11.
  • Wise (EUR to USD): $1,000 × 0.5% (conversion) + small receiving fee ≈ $5–$7. You keep ~$993.

On a single invoice, the difference looks small. But multiply that across 20 invoices per month and you are looking at $58–$140 in monthly fees just from processor selection. Over a year, that is $700–$1,680 in pure cost.

How to Choose

  • Choose Stripe if: You have U.S.-based clients, want developer control, need recurring billing, or run invoices from your own website.
  • Choose PayPal if: Your clients are not tech-savvy, need guest checkout, or you want the fastest way to send an invoice without setup.
  • Choose Wise if: You work with international clients in multiple currencies and need cheap conversion rates.

Many freelancers use a combination: PayPal for quick domestic invoices, Stripe for recurring clients, and Wise for cross-border transfers. Diversifying reduces risk and lets you optimize fees per client.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use multiple processors?

Yes. Most freelancers use PayPal for quick domestic invoices and Stripe for recurring clients. Wise is ideal for international transfers. There is no penalty for using more than one.

Are there hidden fees?

PayPal has a currency conversion markup of 1.5% that many users do not notice until they check the exchange rate. Stripe is more transparent at 1%. Wise uses the real mid-market rate with only a small percentage fee.

Which is cheapest for international clients?

Wise is almost always the cheapest for cross-border transfers. PayPal and Stripe both add currency conversion markups. For pure USD-to-USD domestic work, Stripe and PayPal are close enough that convenience should drive the decision.

How fast do payouts arrive?

Stripe: 2–3 business days (instant available for 1.5% fee). PayPal: 1–3 business days. Wise: 1–2 business days. ACH bank transfers from Stripe are free but slower than instant.
